ABOUT
Garrett van der Leun writes
throwback antiheroes with happy endings.
As the son of a 1960s pop culture fanatic, Garrett’s NorCal childhood was crammed with famous monsters, comic books and character actors. When it came time to grow up and get a “real job,” Garrett became a creature suit performer by way of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop… and then he went ahead and fell in love with the child of Argentine revolutionaries. So while the worlds he creates tend to include bold splashes of genre - be it sci-fi, crime or horror - his characters are prone to grounded moments of breathtaking sacrifice, much like the family that Garrett married into.
As a former reader for Bold Films, Garrett brings a passion for turning classic storytelling tropes on their head and he loves crafting snappy dialogue born out of his education at Second City. With a Film and TV Writing Certificate from UCLA, Garrett’s work has placed at Austin, Big Break and Table Read My Screenplay. In addition, he has also worked as a concept and storyboard artist for companies like Sony and Hartbeat.
