THE WRITING PORTFOLIO OF GARRETT VANDER LEUN

ABOUT

I WAS MADE IN 1982.

I think soup is foul, sweaty stuff.

My first stories were dictated in preschool and they usually involved pooping.

In first grade, I wrote a story called The Didd. It was about a husband murdering his wife. All was well and good at home, but methinks my parents could have lowered the volume on America's Most Wanted.

I love monsters, outcasts and weirdos. I'm a card-carrying member of all three. I prefer Beach Boys to Beatles and DC to Marvel. I always have a book in the car. I like to climb rocks, keep company around board games and screen print bootleg tees. I have played the Grinch at Universal Studios and I’ve run in those same streets as a Scareactor across five years of HHN. I once acted opposite a cartoon.

I am a graduate of Second City Improv School in Los Angeles and I have a Film and TV Writing Certificate from UCLA. Everything I write is grounded in truths I have known, though they often take place a step or two sideways, in a place where something fantastical or magical looms around the edges. Much of what I write is character-driven and plagued by crime or violence, though every story I put to a page is inevitably driven by my optimistic march towards diversity, strength and hope.

I write daily and draw pictures to go with my words.

Thank you for reading.
